Visa

According to the Spanish Royal Decree 2393/2004 of 30 December the general requirements to apply for a student visa are the following:
The following documents must be attached when applying for a student visa:
  • A passport or travel document, valid for the period of duration of the student visa.
  • Letter of admission from an officially recognised public or private educational centre stating the acceptance of the student to course or continue coursing their studies or work on research or training projects. When applicable, this letter of admission must include the code number of the centre as listed in the National Register of Universities and Educational Centres (Registro nacional de universidadades, centros y enseñanzas) or in the State Register of Non-University Educational Centres (Registro estatal de centros no universitarios), both under the authority of the Spanish Ministry for Education and Science, as well as the code number assigned to research centres recognised as such by the Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Commerce or by the Ministry for Education and Science.
  • The syllabus of the course, research project or training the student will attend.
  • Medical insurance covering, for the length of the student's stay in Spain, all medical expenses and any travel expenses related to repatriation due to a sudden illness or accident.
  • Proof of economic means for the duration of the student's stay and, when applicable, to cover the cost of returning to their country.
  • Students under the age of 18 must attach a letter of authorisation signed by their parents or tutor.
If the duration of the stay, for academic or research reasons, exceeds six months, students in addition must attach the following documents:
  • A medical certificate stating that the applicant suffers from none of the illnesses subject to quarantine as specified in the International Health Regulations.
  • Applicants who are 18 or older must not have a criminal record. They must demonstrate this with a criminal record certificate or with an equally valid document issued by the authorities of their home country or of the country they have lived in for the past five years. Under no case can applicants have been convicted for offences listed in the Spanish legal system.
Nevertheless we advise all applicants to contact directly with the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in their country and inquire about any other existing requirements that may not be listed here.
Applicants must bear in mind that if they wish to stay in Spain for more than six months they will need a Type D student visa. Applicants who wish to stay in Spain for a period of time that does not exceed six months will obtain a Type D visa (limited to 180 days) which will be valid for the corresponding duration of their study period.
Important: A visa can never be changed in Spain. The only visa valid is the one obtained from the Spanish Embassy or Consulate before coming to Spain. Only those with a Type D student visa will be allowed to obtain a Student Residence Card (NIE) once they arrive to Spain.
Once in Spain applicants will have 30 days since the date of entry to apply for a residence card at the UAB International Welcome Point or directly at the National Police Station. In order to obtain the residence card, applicants must present their enrolment document and receipt of payment, in addition to a photocopy of their passport, visa and EU entry stamp. In the case of not having an entry stamp applicants can present their boarding pass.
